A Brief Introduction to School of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science

The School of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science (BEFS) consists of two departments and six research institutes. Besides, there are three organizations hosted in the school: the Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society Centre of Nutrition and Food Safety, Post-harvest Agricultural Products Technology Research Centre, Food Science Technology Research Center of Zhejiang Province.

Since established in 1999, the school has been developed dramatically in both education programs and research disciplines. Today there are 10 and 12 disciplines for Ph.D. and M.Sc. programs, respectively. Among these disciplines, Agricultural Engineering and Food Science & Engineering were ranked top 4 within the same disciplines allover China according to the “Reports of National-Wide 1st-Level Discipline Evaluation” published in 2003 and 2006. Agricultural Mechanization Engineering has been approved as a National Key Discipline and two disciplines have been recognized at Provincial and/or Ministry level (Agricultural Mechanization Engineering, Food Science & Engineering). One laboratory has been authorized as a Key Laboratory of National Agricultural Ministry, which is called “the Laboratory of Eco-Agricultural Environmental Engineering and Intelligentized Equipment”

There are 24 full and 30 associate professors in the school. Several outstanding professors have been selected as members of VIP Support Programs at National, Educational Ministry, and Zhejiang Provincial levels. Besides, there are 24 adjunct/visiting professors from many countries.

There are various research projects being undertaken in the school, including national, national ministry or provincial key projects, and international co-operative projects, resulting in great academic achievements. In 2007, the average research funding and publications in SCI & EI journals per capita reached the top within the related disciplines over the country.

Currently the school accommodates 346 full-time undergraduates, 99 graduates for master degree, 125 graduates for doctorate, including 8 foreign graduates.

International academic exchange/cooperation is one of important activities in the school. Up to now, the school has established excellent co-operative relations with near 20 famous institutes in many countries, such as United States, Japan, Germany, Australia, Canada, etc.
