On 12th August 2022, Dr. Jun Zhu, a professor from Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, University of Arkansas, gave a report entitled “Bioconverting the nutrients in dairy manure for L-lactic acid production by Rhizopus Oryzae NRRL395.”

In this report, Dr. Jun Zhu introduced that there were 6.3 billion tons of plastic trash produced in the world in 2021. The plastic pollution is severe nowadays. Lactic acid is the precursor for producing poly-lactic acid, which can be used to manufacture biodegradable plastics. However, to produce lactic acid in a sustainable way, the raw materials must be sourced from renewable or waste resources.

In past few years, Dr. Jun Zhu and his team dedicated to L-lactic acid production with raw materials like dairy manure. In their reasearch, they found Rhizopus Oryzae NRRL395 is good for L-lactic acid production, and Dr. Jun Zhu and his team did many efforts to optimize the whole production process.
