On 18th August 2022, Dr. Mathias Neumann Andersen, a professor from Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University, Denmarkgave a report entitled “Remote sensing of growth, nitrogen and water status of crops”.

Nitrogen and water status are crutial to the growth and production of crops. In this report, Dr. Mathias Neumann Andersen introduced that the irrigation is widely used in cultivation of crops in Denmark. However, either water deficit or water excess would result in yield loss due to N-leaching. Remote sensing technology is easy to operate and costs low, and it can also take detailed picture of spatial and temporal variability. Thus remote sensing was proposed for the cultivation of crops.

Dr. Mathias Neumann Andersen and his team got precise estimates of soil N-mineralization and fertilizer-N requirment. They did advanced research in optimizing the agricultural management, to achieve maximum production using minimum resources of water and Nitrogen. Moreover, they established the model of Drought and ET. They found that remote sensing of crop growth, Nitrogen & Water sufficiency is possible and can bring agricultural management to a new level of detail and precision.

Dr. Mathias Neumann Andersen said their future work would focus on integration of N and water as constraints in the growth model, discrimination between stresses and uncovering the potential for reducing N-leaching and GHG emission by precision management.

Dr. Mathias Neumann Andersen, a member of the Management team of Master of Science Education Program in Water and Environment of Zhongdan College of Chinese Academy of Sciences.  He has been long engaged in the research of water cycle and balance in agroecosystem, the interaction between agricultural hydrological process and plant physiological process, and crop production under water shortage. He is the program reviewer of The US National Science Foundation, United States Department of Agriculture, Norwegian Research Council and International Foundation of Science, and has published more than 242 academic papers in internationally renowned journals.
